Loot Hoard Generator

Generate a hoard of treasure for your D&D 5e campaign.

About This Loot Hoard Generator

This free D&D 5e loot generator rolls a complete treasure hoard in one click: coin sorted by metal, a set of valuables with gold-piece values, a short read-aloud description of how the hoard is stored, and a chance of a magic item scaled to the danger. Every hoard is seeded, so the link you copy recreates the exact same coins, gems, and loot for anyone who opens it.

Coins and valuables are tuned to four CR bands and six named hoard sources, so a bandit cache reads differently from a dragon lair or a temple treasury. Valuables are drawn from 60 hand-written templates across six source-specific pools, and the magic-item roll pulls from 156 items across five rarity tiers, from Common potions up to Legendary artifacts. The odds of a magic item climb with the CR band, from 15 percent at CR 0-4 to 95 percent at CR 17+.

Prefer thinking in party terms? Set a party level and size instead of a CR band and the hoard scales itself: coin totals grow with your party size, rarity ceilings follow the 2024 tier bands, and level 17-20 parties can turn up legendary finds. You can also rename the coinage for your world; the labels follow you across the Shop and Coin Calculator pages and ride along in share links.

Example Hoards

Two real results, exactly as the generator produced them, with descriptions condensed for length. Each link recreates the full hoard from its seed.

Young Dragon's Starter HoardCR 0-4, Dragon Lair
  • A young dragon's starter hoard: loose coin and one or two shiny objects arranged around a shallow sleeping hollow.
  • Coin: 126 gp, 726 sp, 1,356 cp.
  • Valuables: Gilded Crown (515 gp) and Polished Ruby (312 gp).

Bandit Cache Behind a False WallCR 5-10, Bandit Cache
  • A hidden cache behind a false wall holds stolen wealth wrapped in oilskin. Someone planned to come back for this.
  • Coin: 7 pp, 1,411 gp, 3,283 sp.

Tips for Using Generated Hoards

  • Match the source to where the party is standing: a Dragon Lair skews toward gems and high-value pieces, while a Bandit Cache leans on stolen rings, letters, and confiscated goods.
  • Set the CR band to your party, not the single monster; the coin scales hard between bands, and CR 11+ drops copper and silver entirely in favor of gold and platinum.
  • The named valuables are hooks, not just gold values: a Merchant's Seal Ring or a stack of Wax-Sealed Letters can point straight at your next quest.
  • Not every hoard includes a magic item by design; the odds run from 15 percent at low CR to 95 percent at CR 17+, so a dry hoard early on is working as intended.
  • Share the page URL after generating; the seed in the link reproduces the identical hoard, coins and all, for a co-DM or for your own prep notes.

Common Questions

Is this loot generator free?
Yes. Every tool on Tools and Taverns is free, with no account, signup, or generation limit.
How much treasure should a D&D 5e hoard hold?
It scales with challenge. Pick the CR band that matches your party: coin amounts jump between bands, and the composition shifts from copper and silver at low levels to gold and platinum at high levels, so the hoard always feels appropriate to the fight.
Does every hoard include a magic item?
No. A magic item is a scaled chance, not a guarantee: roughly 15 percent at CR 0-4, rising to 95 percent at CR 17+. When one appears its rarity is capped to the band, so low-level parties see Common and Uncommon items rather than Legendary ones.
What do the hoard sources change?
The source swaps the valuables pool and the read-aloud description. A Dragon Lair also multiplies the coin, while a Bandit Cache, Dungeon Vault, Temple Treasury, or Shipwreck each pulls from its own themed list of objects.
How do I get the same hoard back later?
Every hoard has a seed that is written into the page URL after you generate. Copy the link (or use the Share button) and opening it rebuilds the identical hoard, coins, valuables, and any magic item included.
Should I use CR bands or party level?
Either works. CR bands match the monster or encounter that guarded the treasure; party level matches the table that will spend it. Party level also factors in party size (a table of six splits more coin than a table of three) and is the simpler pick if you do not track CR closely.
