About This NPC Generator
This free D&D 5e NPC generator creates a complete non-player character in one click: name, stat block, occupation, appearance, personality quirks, voice, bond, flaw, a secret, and an adventure hook. Every result is seeded, so you can share a link that recreates the exact same NPC.
Each character is assembled from more than 1,300 curated table entries across 25 trait tables, including 123 occupations, 80 adventure hooks, and 66 secrets. Lock the fields you like and reroll the rest, switch the tone, or flip on Quick NPC mode when you just need a face and a voice mid-session.
Use it as a random NPC generator when the party corners a stranger you never wrote, or constrain race, gender, and tone to cast a specific role. The stat block follows the shared 5e format, so a generated shopkeeper, guard, or cultist drops straight into a 2014 or 2024 game.
Example NPCs
Three real results, exactly as the generator produced them. Each link recreates that NPC from its seed.
- Distinctive bracelets and flamboyant clothes; deceitful in conversation; keeps a pet rock in his pocket and speaks to it under his breath.
- Secret: he has a standing invitation to a criminal enclave and uses it more than he admits.
- Hook: he believes the well is poisoning him slowly, and the town disagrees.
- A 98 year old former traveling entertainer with ragged clothes and soft, unlined hands.
- Catchphrase: "If you'll pardon the expression."
- Bond: a bard sang her a song about her own life, and she must find out how the bard knew.
- Deserted from a long, ugly war and changed her name.
- Keeps a small library of banned books in a second home held under a false name.
- Has named every constellation with her own private mythology.
Tips for Using Generated NPCs
- Lock the fields you want to keep (a perfect name, an occupation that fits your plot) and reroll everything else until the character clicks.
- Use Quick NPC mode for table-speed cameos: a compact card instead of the full stat block.
- Pin keepers to the Session Notebook so they are one click away during play.
- Share the page URL after generating; the seed in the link reproduces the identical NPC for anyone who opens it.

Common Questions
- Is this NPC generator free?
- Yes. Every tool on Tools and Taverns is free, with no account, signup, or generation limit.
- Can I use generated NPCs in my campaign, stream, or published adventure?
- Yes. Generated results are yours to use in home games, streams, and published work; no attribution required.
- How do I get the same NPC back later?
- Every NPC has a seed that is written into the page URL after generating. Copy the link (or use the Share button) and opening it recreates the identical character.
- Does it work with the 2024 rules revision?
- Yes. NPC stat blocks use the shared 5e format (ability scores, AC, HP, speed), which reads the same under the 2014 and 2024 rules.
- What makes this different from rolling on the DMG tables?
- One click rolls 25 tables at once and assembles a coherent character: stats, occupation, personality, voice, secret, and hook. Field locking, per-field rerolls, tone control, and seeded sharing are things a book cannot do.
- Can I edit a generated NPC?
- Yes. Names, stats, and every text field are editable in place, and each field has its own reroll. Lock what you like, rewrite or reroll the rest, and the card updates as you go.
- Does the generator include personality quirks?
- Yes. Personality, mannerisms, and voice come from the trait tables, so every NPC arrives with quirks built in. If you only need a mannerism, the 100 NPC Personality Quirks guide linked below is a standalone list, one click away from a full character.
