Mini Dungeon Generator
Generate a 3-room dungeon with atmosphere, connections, and optional encounters.
About This Mini Dungeon Generator
This free D&D 5e mini dungeon generator builds a ready-to-run three-room dungeon in one click. Each room arrives with a name, a purpose you choose, a full five-sense description (sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste), its contents, its exits, and an optional hazard, plus per-room encounters, traps, and loot you can toggle on. Pick one of eight dungeon types and the whole place changes character, from a dry Tomb to a dripping Sewer.
The atmosphere is not templated filler: every room draws its senses from a pool of 200 hand-written lines, five options per sense across all eight dungeon types, so no two rooms read the same. Turn on connections and the generator threads one of ten multi-room storylines (five narrative threads, five structural links) through the crawl, planting a detail in the first room and paying it off in the last.
Example Dungeons
Two real dungeons, exactly as the generator produced them at the seeds shown, condensed for length. Each link opens the generator preset to that dungeon type and room layout.
- The Threshold opens the tomb: faded hieroglyphs spiral the walls, a weapons rack holds a spear and two hand crossbows (one loaded), and a sealed stone door is carved with a death mask, a keyhole set in its mouth.
- A narrative thread ties the rooms together: a well-made carved wooden horse sits in the entrance and pays off at a small grave marker set into the far wall of the throne room.
- The Throne Room boss chamber pairs a Symbol of Pain trap (DC 11 Arcana to identify, 2d6 lightning) with a Will-o-Wisp and Piercer encounter, over a lockbox of coins.
- The Entrance drops into the waterway: algae and black mold stripe the walls at the waterline, the main channel runs knee-deep under a low archway, and its loot cache includes a Potion of Healing.
- The Guard Post throws a heavier fight (a Troll, five Skeletons, and three Lizardfolk) over a Sinkhole trap, with a Tarnished Gold Mask worth 305 gp among the loot.
- The final room turns social: the party meets a Refugee Family of four, and a maintenance ladder leads up to a street-level grate with daylight visible.
Tips for Running Generated Dungeons
- Pick the dungeon type first: it sets the sensory palette, the exit styles, and the trap flavor, so a Sewer reads nothing like a Tomb even with the same room purposes.
- Turn on Narrative Threads to plant a clue in the first room that pays off in the last; it gives a three-room crawl a spine without any extra prep.
- Leave a room's Encounter, Trap, and Loot toggles off when you want a pure exploration or roleplay beat. Not every room needs a fight.
- Set each room's CR band to match your party so the seeded encounters, traps, and loot scale with them instead of against them.
- Read the five senses aloud as the party enters. The sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste lines are written to be spoken, not summarized.

Common Questions
- Is this dungeon generator free?
- Yes. Every tool on Tools and Taverns is free, with no account, signup, or generation limit.
- How many rooms does it generate?
- Three: an opening room, a middle room, and a final chamber, each fully described with all five senses, contents, and exits. You choose each room's purpose, from Entrance and Guard Post to Boss Chamber.
- What are narrative threads and structural links?
- Optional connections that tie the three rooms together. A narrative thread repeats a story detail across the crawl (a child's toy in the entrance, a grave marker at the end); a structural link connects a mechanism in one room to a payoff in another (a key to a locked chest, a lever to a portcullis).
- Can I control the encounters, traps, and loot?
- Yes. Each room has its own Encounter, Trap, and Loot toggles plus a CR band, so you decide which rooms are dangerous and how hard they hit. Leave them off for a quiet room, or turn all three on for a deadly finale.
- Can I use generated dungeons in my campaign, stream, or published adventure?
- Yes. Generated results are yours to use in home games, streams, and published work; no attribution required.
