Puzzle Generator

Generate dungeon puzzles with setups, clues, solutions, and failure consequences.

About This Puzzle Generator

This free D&D 5e puzzle generator drops a ready-to-run dungeon puzzle in one click: a room setup, a clue the party can find, a working solution, a failure consequence with saving throws, and matched Investigation and Arcana DCs. Every result is seeded, so the link in your address bar recreates the exact same puzzle for your table or your co-DM.

Puzzles are assembled from 12 room setups, 10 clues, 10 solutions, and 8 failure consequences, each pulled independently, for 9,600 distinct combinations across three difficulty tiers (easy, medium, and hard) whose skill-check DCs scale from 12 up to 18. Because the pieces mix freely, a mirror room and a constellation floor can share the same trap, so no two seeds feel quite alike.

Example Puzzles

Two real results, exactly as the generator produced them, condensed for length. Each link recreates the full puzzle from its seed.

Constellation FloorEasy
  • Setup: a mosaic floor depicts a night sky, and walking on the wrong constellation causes the ceiling to descend.
  • Clue: the bones of a previous adventurer clutch a note with half the solution. Solution: pour water from the room's fountain into the central bowl.
  • Skill check Investigation DC 12 / Arcana DC 12; failure opens the floor to a pit (Dexterity save DC 12 or 2d6 falling damage).

Facing MirrorsMedium
  • Setup: two mirrors face each other across the room, with a locked chest sitting between them.
  • Clue: someone wrote the answer in the dust, backward. Solution: pour water from the room's fountain into the central bowl.
  • Skill check Investigation DC 15 / Arcana DC 14; failure fires a dart trap (Dexterity save DC 13 or 1d6 piercing damage).

Tips for Using Generated Puzzles

  • The generated clue is your hint budget: reveal it on a successful Investigation check, or hand it over free when the party stalls, so a puzzle never grinds a session to a halt.
  • Treat the solution as the intended path, not the only one; if a player pitches a clever workaround, let their idea beat the listed answer and save the failure consequence for a genuine wrong move.
  • The failure consequence already carries its own save and damage, so you can run the puzzle straight off the screen without stopping to stat a trap.
  • Difficulty only shifts the DCs, not the fiction, so reskin an easy puzzle for a deadly dungeon by keeping the setup and raising the check yourself.
  • Share the page URL after generating; the seed in the link reproduces the identical puzzle for anyone who opens it.

Common Questions

Is this puzzle generator free?
Yes. Every tool on Tools and Taverns is free, with no account, signup, or generation limit.
How do the difficulty levels work?
Difficulty sets the skill-check DCs, not the puzzle itself. Easy puzzles use Investigation and Arcana DC 12, medium moves to DC 15 and 14, and hard rises to DC 18 and 17, so you can match a puzzle to your party without rewriting it.
What if my players find a solution the generator did not list?
Run with it. The listed solution is the intended path, but the clue, setup, and failure consequence give you enough structure to adjudicate a creative answer on the fly and still keep the stakes.
How do I get the same puzzle back later?
Every puzzle has a seed that is written into the page URL after generating. Copy the link and opening it recreates the identical puzzle, clue and consequence included.
Can I use generated puzzles in my campaign, stream, or published adventure?
Yes. Generated results are yours to use in home games, streams, and published work; no attribution required.
