Encounter Generator
Generate a balanced encounter with creatures, environment, and tactical notes.
About This Encounter Generator
This free D&D 5e encounter generator builds a table-ready encounter in one click: an encounter type, a difficulty, a read-aloud description, the creatures involved with counts and challenge ratings, the environment they appear in, and a tactical note for running the fight. Every result is seeded, so you can share a link that recreates the exact same encounter.
Encounters are assembled from 32 hand-written creature templates spread across three types (combat, social, and environmental), then set in one of 12 environments with one of 10 tactical notes. Each result draws one to three creature types from the matching pool, and your chosen tier and party size scale the creature counts, so the same seed can staff anything from a scouting skirmish to a deadly ambush.
This generator now runs on the D&D 2024 encounter math: pick a tier of Low, Moderate, High, or Deadly, and it multiplies the per-character XP budget for that tier by your party size, then fills the encounter with monsters that spend inside the resulting budget. The result includes an XP receipt showing the budget and what was spent against it. Old share links built on the legacy easy, medium, hard, and deadly wording still work; they are translated automatically to the matching 2024 tier.
Example Encounters
Two real results, exactly as the generator produced them, condensed for length. Each link recreates the full encounter from its seed.
- A violent confrontation erupts in a fetid marsh at dusk.
- Four Gnolls (CR 1/2): rampage on a killing blow, chaotic charge.
- Tactical note: noise echoes here, so a loud combat may attract additional wanderers.
- A violent confrontation erupts in a scorched desert ruin.
- One Troll (CR 5): regeneration, vulnerable to fire and acid. Four Goblins (CR 1/4): nimble escape, prefers ambushes.
- Tactical note: water features divide the battlefield and impose difficult terrain.
Tips for Using Generated Encounters
- Set party size and tier before you roll: those two dials scale the creature counts, so a party of six on Deadly gets a very different fight than four on Moderate from the same seed.
- Not every encounter has to be a fight. Roll Social for travelers and negotiations, or Environmental for hazards and lair guardians, to break up a dungeon crawl.
- Read the tactical note first; it tells you how the terrain wants to be played, from chokepoints to reinforcements arriving after three rounds.
- Treat the creature list as a starting cast: swap a Troll for a reflavored beast of the same challenge rating to fit your region without touching the math.
- Share the page URL after generating; the seed in the link reproduces the identical encounter for anyone who opens it.

Common Questions
- Is this encounter generator free?
- Yes. Every tool on Tools and Taverns is free, with no account, signup, or generation limit.
- How does it balance an encounter to my party?
- You set each character's level and a tier: Low, Moderate, High, or Deadly. The generator multiplies the 2024 per-character XP budget for that tier by your party size, then fills the encounter with monsters that spend inside the resulting budget, so the same seed can staff anything from a measured skirmish up to a deadly threat.
- What changed with the 2024 rules?
- The old easy, medium, hard, and deadly labels are gone from the current system. The generator now uses four budget tiers (Low, Moderate, High, Deadly), each defined as an XP amount per character rather than a flat threshold for the whole party, so the budget scales cleanly with party size.
- What kinds of encounters can I generate?
- Combat (14 creature templates from goblins to trolls), social (10 templates like merchants, patrols, and rival adventurers), and environmental (8 templates such as gelatinous cubes, mimics, and rust monsters), or leave it on Random.
- How do I get the same encounter back later?
- Every encounter has a seed that is written into the page URL after generating. Copy the link (or use the Share button) and opening it recreates the identical encounter, creatures and terrain and all.
- Can I use generated encounters in my campaign, stream, or published adventure?
- Yes. Generated results are yours to use in home games, streams, and published work; no attribution required.
