Curse Generator
Generate a curse for a magic item or an afflicted person or place.
About the Curse Generator
This free D&D 5e curse generator builds a complete curse in one click: an evocative name, whether it rides on an item or afflicts a person, its severity, the deed that earned it, the narrative effect, a suggested game mechanic, a sign that reveals it, and the condition to lift it. Every result is seeded, so you can share a link that recreates the exact same curse.
Curses are assembled from 200 hand-written pieces, with origins, effects, suggested mechanics, discovery signs, and removal conditions written separately for each of the six combinations of type and severity. A minor item quirk and a major affliction never draw from the same pool, so a Minor curse reads like an inconvenience while a Major one reads like a campaign.
Example Curses
Two real results, exactly as the generator produced them, condensed for length. Each link recreates the full curse from its seed.
- Origin: breaking a minor promise sworn on a household hearth.
- Effect: their favorite foods now taste faintly of ash.
- Mechanic: disadvantage on the first Constitution saving throw made each day.
- Lifted by a Remove Curse spell, outright, with no further complication.
- Origin: reneging on a bargain struck with a devil in front of witnesses.
- Effect: their voice, when raised in anger, carries a second voice that is not theirs.
- Mechanic: one point of a chosen ability score is lost permanently each time the trigger repeats.
- Only a legendary artifact or long-lost ritual is the known cure; a Greater Restoration fails outright.
Tips for Using Generated Curses
- Match severity to stakes: a Minor curse is a flavorful complication for a single session, while a Major one is a story thread worth a whole arc.
- Lead with the discovery sign, not the mechanic. Let the party notice the cold draft or the out-of-sync shadow before anyone casts Detect Magic.
- The suggested mechanic is a starting point, not a ruling; dial the disadvantage or ability-score loss up or down to fit your table.
- Hand the removal condition to the party as a hook. A Major curse that needs a long-lost ritual is a quest in disguise.
- Share the page URL after generating; the seed in the link reproduces the identical curse for any player who opens it.

Common Questions
- Is this curse generator free?
- Yes. Every tool on Tools and Taverns is free, with no account, signup, or generation limit.
- What is the difference between an item curse and an affliction?
- An item curse lives on an object and follows whoever carries it; an affliction is bound to a person, place, or bloodline. Choose the type in the dropdown, or leave it on Any and let the seed decide.
- How do I lift a curse in D&D 5e?
- It depends on severity. Every generated curse ships its own removal condition: a Minor curse often yields to a simple Remove Curse spell or a sincere apology, while a Major one may need a specific quest, a lost artifact, or the being who cast it to relent.
- How do I get the same curse back later?
- Every curse has a seed that is written into the page URL after generating. Copy the link (or use the Share button) and opening it recreates the identical curse, removal condition and all.
- Can I use generated curses in my campaign, stream, or published adventure?
- Yes. Generated results are yours to use in home games, streams, and published work; no attribution required.
