About the Campaign Timeline

This free campaign timeline keeps a running log of everything that happens in your D&D 5e game, in the order the story unfolds. Each entry holds a title, the in-game date it happened, a note, and a category, so a hard-fought battle, a scrap of lore, and a long stretch of travel all sit on the same rail and read as one continuous history.

Add the real-world date you played a session, or link an entry to an NPC or location you already saved in the Session Notebook, and a name in the log becomes a click through to the full record. Everything lives in your browser: there is no account, no signup, and nothing is uploaded. You can drag entries to reorder them and export the whole timeline to Markdown whenever you want a copy.

Tips for Keeping a Campaign Timeline

  • Log the in-game date, not just the session number. When a player asks how long ago they met the duke, a timeline dated in Flamerule answers instantly.
  • Use categories to skim: mark the big fights as battle, the discoveries as lore, and the long journeys as travel, so you can find a moment at a glance.
  • Link entries to saved NPCs and locations. A timeline that turns names into clicks becomes the fastest way back to the notes you already wrote.
  • Fill in the real-world play date after each session; it doubles as an attendance and pacing record when you plan the next arc.

Common Questions

Is the campaign timeline free?
Yes. Every tool on Tools and Taverns is free, with no account, signup, or generation limit.
Where is my timeline saved?
In your browser, on this device only. Nothing is uploaded to a server and no account is created, so clearing your browser data or switching devices starts you fresh. Use the export button to keep a Markdown copy.
Can I track in-game dates and real-world session dates together?
Yes. Every entry has an in-game date field (write it however your world does, like 3rd of Flamerule, 1492 DR) and a separate real-world date for when you actually played, so the story order and your table calendar both stay clear.
How do I link a timeline entry to an NPC or location?
Pin the NPC, settlement, or other result to your Session Notebook first, then pick it from the linked-item dropdown when you add or edit a timeline entry. The entry then shows a link straight to that saved record.
Can I reorder events after adding them?
Yes. Drag an entry up or down the rail, or use the Up and Down buttons on each card, so the timeline always reflects the true sequence even when you add a memory out of order.
