About This Tavern Generator
This free D&D 5e tavern generator rolls a complete watering hole in one click: a named tavern with a sign to hang over the door, its exterior and room count, the keeper who runs it, the patrons drinking in it, and a short drink menu with prices in coin. Every result is seeded, so the share link recreates the identical tavern for your players or your future self.
Tavern names are built from 75 adjectives and 79 nouns, for 5,925 possible signs, wrapped around 9 exterior materials from thatch to cut sandstone. The keeper and every patron is a full NPC with a class and level, alignment, occupation, a personality trait, an ideal, a bond, a flaw, a secret, an adventure hook, and a voice you can do at the table. The Tone control recolors the same tavern grittier or lighter without rerolling anyone.
Example Taverns
Two real results, exactly as the generator produced them, condensed for length. Each link recreates the full tavern from its seed.
- Run by Selinel Trueflame, a level 2 aasimar rogue (Neutral Evil) with a light contralto drawl who hums before answering and swears they will only say this once.
- Keeper hook: a map of the cellars under this town has come into their hands. Their secret: the old mill burned down because of a younger self they do not talk about.
- Five patrons, including a dwarf bookseller who still gets letters from a lover from before their marriage, a dwarf mercenary with a body under a neighbor's floor, and an aasimar architect who was paid to misdirect the search for a missing child.
- On the menu: hot chocolate, fine wine, black tea, barleywine, and bitter ale.
- Run by Uaadeh Yaacliel, a level 3 dragonborn barbarian (Lawful Evil) who talks louder than the room requires and signs off with "Fair winds and full pockets."
- Keeper hook: they once made an enemy of a scholar who has since become a very powerful one. Their secret: a map sewn into the lining of their cloak leads somewhere they dare not go.
- Nine patrons fill the two floors, among them a human coachman whose spouse's first spouse is not actually dead, a half-orc herald with a twin no one in town knows about, and a dwarf butler raising a child who is not theirs by blood.
- On the menu: barleywine, common wine, absinthe, whiskey, and tequila.
Tips for Running a Generated Tavern
- Read the keeper's adventure hook aloud as the first thing the party overhears; it is the cheapest quest seed in the building.
- Pick one patron with a secret that touches the party's current plot and promote them to a named contact. Leave the rest as color.
- Use the floor and room counts to place the fight: a one-floor, three-room taproom brawls differently from a two-floor inn with a stair to defend.
- The drink menu prices come from the SRD 5.2.1 food and drink table. Mark the whole list up or down to show how rich the town is, but keep the ratios.
- Share the page URL after generating. The seed in the link rebuilds the identical tavern, keeper, patrons, and menu included, so players see exactly what you saw.

Common Questions
- Is this tavern generator free?
- Yes. Every tool on Tools and Taverns is free, with no account, signup, or generation limit.
- What does a generated tavern include?
- A name, an exterior material, floor and room counts, the keeper, a set of patrons, and a drink menu with prices. The keeper and every patron is a complete D&D 5e NPC with ability scores, class and level, alignment, personality, a secret, an adventure hook, and a voice.
- Can I generate other buildings here?
- This page always rolls a tavern. For residences, temples, warehouses, barracks, guild halls, stables, libraries, and blacksmiths, use the building generator, which has the type dropdown.
- Where does the drink menu come from?
- The menu is rolled from the same drink list the tavern menu generator uses, with prices from the SRD 5.2.1 food and drink table. For a full food and drink menu with descriptions, open the tavern menu generator.
- How do I get the same tavern back later?
- Every tavern has a seed that is written into the page URL after generating. Copy the link (or use the Share button) and opening it recreates the identical tavern, keeper and patrons and all.
