Travel Event Generator

Generate random events, complications, and encounter hooks for travel scenes.

About This Travel Event Generator

This free D&D 5e travel event generator turns the miles between destinations into a scene. Pick a terrain, a season, and a party level, and it returns a keyed event with two ways to resolve it, an encounter hook, a navigation DC, a foraging DC, an encounter chance, seeded weather, and a read-aloud narrative that ties it all together. Every result is seeded, so a shared link recreates the exact same event.

Events are drawn from 360 hand-written travel scenarios, 40 for each of nine terrains: road, forest, mountain, sea, desert, swamp, plains, tundra, and underground. Every scenario carries two skill-based resolutions, each with its own success and failure outcome, and the read-aloud narrative is stitched from 54 terrain openers and 16 seasonal moods, so the same forest reads differently in spring than it does in winter.

Example Travel Events

Two real results, exactly as the generator produced them, condensed for length. Each link recreates the full event from its seed.

Hollow Tree CacheForest, summer, level 5
  • A massive hollow tree stands off the trail, its interior dark; a faint smell of leather and wax suggests something is stored inside.
  • Resolve with Investigation (DC 11) or Perception (DC 12): a thorough search uncovers a ranger's cache of preserved rations and a waterproofed regional map, or a failed reach disturbs a nest of biting insects.
  • Navigation DC 12, foraging DC 12 (+2 from extreme heat at 112 F), 35% encounter chance, and a hook that something moves in the undergrowth just off the path.

Cave MouthMountain, summer, level 5
  • A cave entrance opens in the cliff face beside the trail, exhaling a warm breath of air that smells of ash and old smoke.
  • Resolve with Perception (DC 13) or Nature (DC 12): mountain ecology tells you the warm current marks a deep system with a second exit, a possible shortcut, while a careless look nearly stumbles onto the current occupant.
  • Navigation DC 15, foraging DC 17 (+2 from extreme heat), 35% encounter chance, and the uneasy sense the party has seen these surroundings before.

Tips for Using Travel Events

  • Roll one event per day of overland travel, or per watch on a long push, to give a journey texture instead of a single skipped montage.
  • Each event offers two skill resolutions on purpose: read out both DCs and let players pick the approach that fits their characters, so the party face is not the only one who contributes.
  • The foraging and navigation DCs already fold in the weather, so extreme heat or a storm raises the stakes without extra bookkeeping at the table.
  • Treat the encounter chance as a straight percentage roll; on a hit, hand the encounter hook to the encounter generator to build the actual fight.
  • Share the page URL after generating; the seed in the link reproduces the identical event, weather and outcomes included.

Common Questions

Is this travel event generator free?
Yes. Every tool on Tools and Taverns is free, with no account, signup, or generation limit.
How often should I roll a travel event?
A common cadence is one event per day of overland travel, or one per watch when the party is pushing hard or through dangerous country. Use the encounter chance on each result to decide whether the hook also becomes a fight.
What do the two skill checks on each event mean?
Every event ships two ways to resolve it, each with its own DC and separate success and failure text. Offer both to the table so different party members can lead: for example, an Investigation search or a Perception scan of the same site.
Does the weather actually change anything mechanical?
Yes. Extreme heat, extreme cold, and heavy precipitation each raise the foraging DC and can call for Constitution saving throws, which the narrative flags. Navigation difficulty is set by terrain, from a DC 10 road up to a DC 15 mountain crossing.
Can I lock in a specific terrain and season?
Yes. Choose any of the nine terrains and any of the four seasons, or leave terrain on Random to let the seed decide. Party level scales the encounter chance from 25% at low levels up to 65% at the top tier.
