Trap Generator

Generate a D&D 5e trap with detection and disarm mechanics.

About This Trap Generator

This free D&D 5e trap generator builds a ready-to-run hazard in one click: a named trap, a written description, and the numbers you need at the table (a detection DC, a disarm or bypass DC, damage dice, and a saving throw). Every result is seeded, so you can share a link that recreates the exact same trap.

Traps are drawn from 30 named designs, ten each for mechanical, magical, and environmental hazards, then dressed with one of 30 hand-written description templates (two for each of the 15 type-and-location pairings). Four CR bands scale the DCs and damage dice, so a pit trap for a first-level party and one guarding an archlich's vault read the same but hit very differently.

Example Traps

Two real results, exactly as the generator produced them, condensed for length. Each link recreates the full trap from its seed.

Bear Trap ClusterMechanical, dungeon, CR 0-4
  • Built into the dungeon's architecture, near-invisible in the dim light.
  • Spotting the trigger requires DC 10 Perception; disarming it requires DC 10 Thieves' Tools.
  • Anyone caught in its effect takes 1d6 slashing damage, DC 11 Dexterity save for half.

Symbol of PainMagical, tomb, CR 0-4
  • Laid down with the burial rites, meant to punish those who desecrate the dead.
  • DC 11 Arcana identifies the inscription; Dispel Magic (spell save DC 11) neutralizes it.
  • Desecrators take 2d6 fire damage, DC 13 Dexterity save for half.

Tips for Using Generated Traps

  • Read the detection DC before the players enter the room, then call for a passive Perception check against it so the trap can trigger without a warning.
  • The disarm DC changes tool by type: mechanical traps want Thieves' Tools, magical ones want Dispel Magic, and environmental ones want a Dexterity or Survival check to bypass. Tell the party which skill applies once they spot it.
  • Match the CR band to your party, not the dungeon: an old tomb can hold a CR 17+ ward if a powerful guardian set it, and the damage dice scale to match.
  • Pin a couple of traps to your notebook before a session so you have a hazard ready when the party pries at a locked door or a suspicious altar.
  • Share the page URL after generating; the seed in the link reproduces the identical trap, damage roll and all, for anyone who opens it.

Common Questions

Is this trap generator free?
Yes. Every tool on Tools and Taverns is free, with no account, signup, or generation limit.
What trap types can I generate?
Mechanical (pit traps, dart arrays, crushing walls), magical (glyphs, runes, and warding symbols), and environmental (cave-ins, gas vents, quicksand), or leave it on Random. You can also pin a location (dungeon, tomb, thieves' guild, temple, or wilderness) so the description fits where the party finds it.
How does the trap scale to my party's level?
The CR band sets the numbers. Across the four bands the detection, disarm, and save DCs climb from the low teens into the twenties, and the damage grows from a die or two of d6 up to several dice of d10, so the same trap concept stays a threat at any tier.
How do I get the same trap back later?
Every trap has a seed that is written into the page URL after generating. Copy the link (or use the Share button) and opening it recreates the identical trap, DCs and damage and all.
Can I use generated traps in my campaign, stream, or published adventure?
Yes. Generated results are yours to use in home games, streams, and published work; no attribution required.
