About the Initiative Tracker

This free D&D 5e initiative tracker runs your combat encounter from one screen. Add each combatant with a name and hit points, then either roll a d20 plus their initiative bonus or type in a number you rolled at the table. The list sorts itself highest initiative first, and ties keep the order you added them in, so you always know who acts next.

Once combat is underway, step through the order with the Prev and Next buttons and the tracker counts rounds for you. For every combatant you can raise or lower current HP, flag concentration, and apply any of the 14 SRD conditions with an optional round counter that reminds you when an effect ends. Nothing is uploaded and no account is needed: your combat is kept in your browser for the session and you can export it to a plain-text summary at any time.

Tips for Running Combat

  • Add every combatant during setup before you hit Next turn. New arrivals join at the top of round one, so the highest roller still acts first no matter what order you typed them in.
  • Use the round counter on the condition chips: set the number of rounds a spell like Hold Person lasts and you have a running reminder instead of a note scribbled off to the side.
  • Toggle the concentration flag the moment a caster casts a concentration spell. When they take damage you can see at a glance who needs a saving throw.
  • Export the encounter to text before you close the tab if you want to keep it. The tracker holds your combat for the current browser session, but clearing it or the Clear all button wipes the board.

Common Questions

Is this initiative tracker free?
Yes. Every tool on Tools and Taverns is free, with no account, signup, or generation limit.
Do I need to create an account or is anything uploaded?
No. The tracker runs entirely in your browser. Your combatants, HP, and conditions are saved locally for the current session and are never sent to a server, so there is nothing to log in to and nothing to upload.
Can I roll initiative in the tool, or only enter my own numbers?
Both. Enter a combatant's initiative bonus and press Roll d20+bonus to have the tool roll for them, or leave the bonus blank and type the exact number you rolled at the table into the Init field.
How does the tracker handle ties and turn order?
Combatants are sorted by initiative from highest to lowest. When two share the same initiative, they keep the order you added them in, so the tie stays stable as you advance through the round.
What happens if I reload the page or close the tab?
Reloading keeps your combat: it is stored in the browser for the session. Closing the tab or browser clears it, so export the encounter to text first if you want a copy to keep.
