What a Bandit Cache Contains

The Bandit Cache source produces a stash rather than a vault: crates and satchels holding weeks of plunder in coin, jewelry, and confiscated goods stacked without ceremony. On the default CR 5-10 band that is mixed coin in the hundreds of gold, personal valuables that used to belong to someone, and a lower chance at a magic item than a dungeon or dragon hoard, since bandits fence what they can.

Drop the CR band to 0-4 for a highway gang's camp and the cache shrinks to a strongbox of coin and a few stolen trinkets, which is the right size for a level 2 party.

When to Use It

Use it for the bandit camp, the smuggler's cellar, the crooked toll bridge, or any place the party clears out of people who took from others. The confiscated goods are the hook: some of this belonged to a merchant, a village, or a noble who would pay to have it back, or who will assume the party are the thieves.

Pair it with the rumor generator to seed who is missing what, and the quest generator if returning the goods becomes the next job.

Questions

What kind of items show up in a bandit cache?
Stolen and confiscated goods: jewelry, letters, and everyday valuables alongside the coin, themed as recently looted rather than long-hoarded.
Is a bandit cache lower value than a dragon hoard?
Usually. The bandit source does not carry the dragon source coin multiplier, so totals tend to run lower at the same CR band.
