About This Wild Magic Surge Roller
This free D&D 5e wild magic surge roller rolls a single result off a d100 surge table in one click, so a wild sorcerer's chaos resolves at the table instead of in a book. Every roll is seeded, which means the page URL recreates the exact same surge for anyone who opens it.
The roller uses its own original surge table, written for Tools and Taverns: 50 effects across the full d100, where each result spans two numbers (01-02 through 99-00). The effects range from harmless oddities to fight-changing bursts of power, and each roll is paired with one of 12 original sensory manifestations that add atmosphere without changing the mechanics.
Example Surges
Two real results, exactly as the roller produced them. Each link recreates the same surge from its seed.
- You can speak only in rhyme for the next hour. Anything you try to say that does not rhyme comes out as a sneeze.
- A roleplay surge with no combat cost, but a memorable hour for the sorcerer who has to bargain, bluff, or plead entirely in verse.
- Thorny vines burst from the ground within 20 feet of you. Each creature in that area other than you must succeed on a Strength saving throw against your spell save DC or be restrained until the end of its next turn.
- A battlefield surge that can pin enemies and allies alike, so check who is standing near the caster before resolving it.
Tips for Running Wild Magic
- Keep this roller open whenever a wild magic sorcerer is at the table, and resolve each surge the moment it triggers without breaking table flow.
- For a wilder table, house-rule a surge on every spent sorcery point or on every roll of a natural 1, and let this roller settle the result each time.
- Watch positioning before you roll: some surges (grasping vines, a tolling bell that deafens everyone nearby) catch allies, so adjudicate who is standing where first.
- Pin a memorable surge to your Session Notebook so you can call back to that hour of rhyming or the runaway component pouch later in the campaign.
- Share the page URL after rolling; the seed in the link reproduces the identical surge for a player who wants proof of what really happened.

Common Questions
- Is this wild magic surge roller free?
- Yes. Every tool on Tools and Taverns is free, with no account, signup, or roll limit.
- When does a wild magic surge happen in D&D 5e?
- That depends on your table: the wild magic sorcerer subclass describes when its surges trigger, and many tables also trigger surges from wild magic zones, unstable artifacts, or homebrew rules. Whatever the trigger, this roller settles what happens.
- How many results are on this wild magic surge table?
- This roller uses 50 original effects written for Tools and Taverns. It covers the full d100, where each of the 50 results spans a two-number band (01-02, 03-04, and so on up to 99-00), so every possible roll lands on exactly one effect.
- How do I get the same surge back later?
- Every roll writes a seed into the page URL. Copy the link (or use the Export buttons) and opening it reproduces the identical surge, roll label and effect text included.
- Can I use this for homebrew wild magic rules?
- Yes. Roll it whenever your table wants chaos: for Tides of Chaos recharges, wild magic surge zones, cursed items, or a house rule that surges on every sorcery point. The result is yours to use in home games, streams, and published work.
