About This Fantasy Name Generator

This free D&D 5e name generator invents character and NPC names that sound like they belong in the Forgotten Realms, not like a keyboard mash. Pick a race and a gender, generate a batch, and every name arrives in a shareable, seeded link so you can hand a player the exact list you saw or pull the same one back mid-session.

Names are built with Markov chains trained on hand-curated D&D name lists, one chain per race and gender, so a dwarf reads dwarven and an elf reads elven. The engine spans nine playable races, with human names drawn from eight regional ethnicities that each carry their own first-name and surname pools. Surnames follow each culture: dwarven clan names alone combine 19 prefixes with 9 suffixes for 171 possibilities, elves get one of ten translated house names like Meliamne (Oakenheel), and tieflings carry a chosen virtue in quotes.

Example Names

Three real batches, exactly as the generator produced them. Each link reopens the tool and regenerates the identical list from its seed.

Dwarf, maleseed 7
  • Skagr Blackheart, Ungin Battlesmith, Harind Bearsmith, Urer Alebeard.
  • Jakr Darkfist, Rgori Aleheart, Ghorg Browndigger, Bundi Mountainfist.
  • Every surname is a clan compound (prefix plus trade or trait), the dwarven house-name pattern.

Tips for Naming NPCs

  • Generate a batch and skim for the one that fits; the seed in the link lets you keep the winner and toss the rest.
  • Match the race to the NPC you are placing: a Waterdhavian noble reads Chondathan, a northern sellsword reads Illuskan, both under Human.
  • Half-Orc names are a single given name by design, so use them when you want a blunt, surname-free NPC.
  • Pin a good batch to your Session Notebook, or share the page link so a player can pick their own character name from the same list.
  • Need a whole tavern crowd at once? Generate a larger batch and assign names down the list as the party works the room.

Common Questions

Is this name generator free?
Yes. Every tool on Tools and Taverns is free, with no account, signup, or generation limit.
How are the names generated?
A Markov chain is trained on a hand-curated list of names for each race and gender, then walks that chain letter by letter to build new names in the same style. That is why the output sounds authentic instead of random: a dwarf name is stitched from dwarven syllables, an elf name from elven ones.
Which races can I generate names for?
Nine: dwarf, elf, gnome, halfling, human, dragonborn, half-orc, tiefling, and half-elf. Human names further split across eight regional ethnicities, and half-elves borrow from either their human or elven parent.
Can I get the same list of names back later?
Yes. After you generate, the race, gender, and a seed are written into the page URL. Copy that link (or use the Share button) and reopening it regenerates the identical batch, in the same order.
Can I use these names in my campaign or published adventure?
Yes. Generated names are yours to use in home games, streams, and published work, with no attribution required.
