Building Generator
Generate a building with details, occupants, and drink menus for taverns.
About This Building Generator
This free D&D 5e building generator drops a fully populated location onto your table in one click: a named structure, its exterior and floor plan, an owner, and a set of occupants, all seeded so a shared link recreates the exact same building.
Pick from 9 building types (taverns, residences, religious buildings, warehouses, barracks, guild halls, stables, libraries, and blacksmiths) or leave it on Random. Each type draws its own name and character: taverns alone are built from 75 adjectives and 79 nouns, for 5,925 possible signs to hang over the door, wrapped around 9 exterior materials. Every owner and occupant is a complete NPC with ability scores, a voice, a secret, and an adventure hook.
Example Buildings
Two real results, exactly as the generator produced them, condensed for length. Each link recreates the full building from its seed.
- A quiet, low-key adobe bar with three rooms, run by Aralarj Kimbatuul, a level 2 dragonborn knight (Lawful Neutral) whose secret is that he remembers the day he was born.
- Owner hook: a small shrine in his cellar has begun to answer questions it was never asked.
- Five occupants come with it, including a half-elf butcher, a halfling psychic, and a dwarf hermit on the run after an assassination attempt on his life.
- A middle-class adobe hut that doubles as a smuggler's den, owned by Walde Turen, a level 1 gnome fighter (Neutral Good) and toll-collector.
- His secret: he informed on his own cell to escape imprisonment, and keeps a growing stash of stolen trinkets under the floorboards.
- Two residents share the house: Ront, a half-orc baker who once sailed with a pirate crew that was never caught, and Iathira, a half-elf bartender desperate to afford passage out of town.
Tips for Using Generated Buildings
- Taverns come with a rolled drink menu; the other building types do not, so pick Tavern when you need a watering hole with stock on the shelf.
- Every occupant is a full NPC: promote any one into a named quest-giver by lifting their secret, adventure hook, or bond straight from the block.
- Use the floor and room counts to sketch a quick map; a smuggler's den with a hidden cellar plays very differently from a single-room shack.
- Set the Tone dropdown to color the same building grittier or lighter without rerolling its occupants.
- Share the page URL after generating; the seed in the link rebuilds the identical building, owner and residents included.

Common Questions
- Is this building generator free?
- Yes. Every tool on Tools and Taverns is free, with no account, signup, or generation limit.
- What building types can I generate?
- Nine: taverns, residences, religious buildings, warehouses, barracks, guild halls, stables, libraries, and blacksmiths, or leave it on Random to let the seed decide.
- Do the buildings come with NPCs?
- Yes. Every building includes an owner and a set of occupants, each a complete D&D 5e NPC with ability scores, a personality, a voice, a secret, and an adventure hook you can hand to your players.
- Why do only some buildings have a drink menu?
- The menu is a tavern feature. Generate a Tavern to get a rolled list of drinks and prices; other building types skip it.
- How do I get the same building back later?
- Every building has a seed that is written into the page URL after generating. Copy the link (or use the Share button) and opening it recreates the identical building, owner and occupants and all.
